NEW BLACK DISCIPLES ENDOWMENT FUND
THE REV. DR. TIMOTHY JAMES & MRS. JOYCE JAMES FUND
The Rev. Dr. Timothy and Mrs. Joyce James fund was recently established as a named fund within the Black Disciples Endowment Fund. The James named fund is established in recognition of Rev. Dr. and Mrs. James sustained witness as servant leaders and committed advocates for Black disciples and courageous partnerships across the whole church, and in celebration of the 104-year legacy of the National Christian Missionary Convention and the National Convocation.
A third-generation Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) minister, Dr. James served as Associate General Minister and the Administrative Secretary for the National Convocation for 17 years and retired on December 31, 2020. He served in partnership with three general minister and presidents, including Rev. Dr. Chris Hobgood, Rev. Dr. Sharon Watkins, and Rev. Teresa (Terri) Hord Owens. Dr. and Mrs. James are members of Light of the World Christian Church in Indianapolis, Indiana, and faithful singers in the Golden Lights Choir. Mrs. James recently retired as a public-school teacher.
In a recent article in Chronicle celebrating Rev. James ministry as an alumnus and trustee of Culver-Stockton College, “James recalled one instance where an instructor guided him through a challenging situation as the white congregations in town would not allow Timothy to preach regularly in their churches. “Culver was eye opening” James said, as he told how the First Christian Church would allow him to read scriptures but not to teach because “the white congregations were not ready for a black minister.” During his senior year Second Christian Church in New London welcomed Timothy to their congregation twice a month to practice his craft of preaching, ultimately preparing him for the profession.” The James named fund celebrates Dr. and Mrs. James and all Disciples leaders that persist in their commitment to ministry and to removing barriers to ministry in witness to the power of God’s limitless love.
The Black Disciples Endowment Fund is comprised of numerous named funds and legacy donations honoring individuals and ancestors throughout the life of the church including the Timothy and Joyce James named fund. Contributions to the fund can be made online here or sent directly to the Christian Church Foundation. Contact Rev. Yvonne T.
